GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under direction of the Chief Marshal, to perform a variety of duties involved in performing law enforcement-related functions in facility security, transports, and arrests.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position exercises no supervision.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Execute all lawful service, including: arrest warrants, subpoenas, and mental health commitments.

The safe transportation of all prisoners, inmates, and mental health clients.

Exercise authority in preventing or defusing potentially violent situations involving court personnel, the mentally ill, and others.

Communicate with Abilene Police Department personnel, Taylor County Jail personnel, Legal Department staff, attorneys, other court staff members, to obtain and disburse information necessary to court operations, transports, and arrests.

Enter, retrieve, and interpret all types of data.

Perform fundamental tasks associated with service or process including telephone calls to defendants and others, verifying identifying information, addresses and other identifying documents, etc.

Attend all court sessions in both City Hall and Taylor County Jail to assist judge, record document dispositions, maintain order, and direct defendants, jurors, and witnesses. This involves:

  1.  Legibly hand-writing log entries, forms, etc.
  2. Transporting documents, cash, or persons to and from the court office, jail, and the Taylor County Law Enforcement Center, or other facilities throughout the state.

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Law enforcement methods, practices, and pertinent laws.

Office practices, methods, and computer equipment.

English language including spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation           

Skill to:   

Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Maintain order and safety in various situations.

Operate office and police equipment, including computer equipment.

Ability to:

Cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for others.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Maintain records and files; assemble and organize data, and prepare logs.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Safely and effectively transport detainees or mental health clients.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

A minimum of two (2) years of prior law enforcement experience is preferred.

Some knowledge of security and court operations is preferred.

Education/Training:

A high school diploma or GED and the completion of approved Texas Basic Peace Officer Academy are required.                  

License or Certificate:

A Texas Basic Peace Officer License is required.

A valid Texas Driver’s License is required.

Special Requirements:

Ability to be on call and travel throughout the state of Texas.

Safely and effectively maintain custody or transport detainees or mental health clients to various locations and facilities.

Must be available for on-call duty in order to respond to operational needs and/or to respond to emergencies or immediate transports.

Ability to run, stoop, bend, kneel, and twist.

With or without accommodation, ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
