GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The primary function of this position is to maintain the computing infrastructure of the City’s data network.  Under the direction and supervision of the Information Technology Manager, this position performs various technical tasks relating to the specification, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, repair, and general maintenance of City computer systems, software, peripheral devices, networks, and other technologies.
 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
 

Computer Technician I – This position exercises no supervision.
 

Computer Technician II/III – This position may exercise technical or functional supervision over lower level staff as required.
 

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
 

  1. Prepares computers for installation using imaging software and performing various configuration tasks.
     

  1. Installs computer systems, peripherals, and software; includes preparatory tasks, transportation, physical networking, and power management and protection.
     

  1. Performs troubleshooting (which may include Internet research and vendor contact) to correct computer hardware and software malfunctions.
     

  1. Provides user training and support regarding the use of technology.
     

  1. Maintains and updates skills as required to remain proficient with respect to advances in computing technologies.
     

  1. Performs other related maintenance activities, such as installation, troubleshooting, and repair of the core network infrastructure, including: designing and modifying computer network configurations; installation and management of networking devices such as switches, routers, and firewalls, and specifying and installing physical network media such as patch panels, cabling, and associated mounting and racking hardware.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 

Knowledge of:

Computer Technician I:

Basic computing concepts; fundamental networking concepts.

 

Windows operating systems, mainstream client software applications, productivity software, and common utilities.
 

Computer hardware components and functions; computer repair techniques.
 

Computer Technician II 
 

Computing concepts for centrally managed networks.
 

Various operating systems; intermediate network computing concepts.
 

Methods for mass deployment of end user systems and peripherals in a corporate setting.
 

Standard user services including print, file, and all directory services.
 

Computer Technician III
 

Advanced computing and network architecting concepts including DHCP and DNS, and TCP/IP.
 

Non-enterprise client/server applications.
 

Basic server hardware; basic storage concepts including RAID, NAS, and SAN.

Follow instructions to image, install, configure, repair, and replace computer hardware, components, software, and peripherals.

Computer Technician II

 

 

Configure computers; create end user system images.
 

Write end user instructions and documentation.
 

Use administrative tools to manage user accounts and configure resource access permissions.

 

Computer Technician III

 

Implement new network segments; configure and install network electronics.
 

Perform physical installation of rack mount server and network hardware.
 

Ability to:

Computer Technician II/III

 

 

Diagnose uncommon computer malfunctions.
 

Troubleshoot and diagnose network failures including DHCP and DNS issues.
 

Organize and coordinate computer installation and repair activities.

Computer Technician II
  

 

Analyze technology needs, evaluate possible solutions, and make recommendations.
 

Diagnose and repair non-enterprise client/server applications.
 

Ability to troubleshoot and analyze networks and recommend optimization.
 

Operationally manage multiple simultaneous projects.
 

Coordinate and provide support to System Administrators across technologies.
 

Experience and Training Guidelines:
 

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
 
Experience:

Computer Technician I

One (1) to three (3) years of previous computer service operations experience is preferred. 

E
xperience installing and maintaining end-user computer systems and recent experience working as a technician at a computer repair facility is preferred.


Computer Technician II 


 Three (3) to four (4) years of computer operations experience is required.  

 

Experience managing computer workstations in a corporate network environment with more than 50 computers is preferred.
 

Computer Technician III
 

At least five (5) to seven (7) years of in-depth experience working with computer, peripheral, and network hardware, software, firmware, and operating systems in an enterprise environment is required.
 

Education/Training:
 

Computer Technician I
 

A high school diploma or GED supplemented by college level course work in computing technologies.
 

An entry level vendor certifications are preferred. (e.g. CompTIA A+, Microsoft MTA)
 

Computer Technician II
 

An Associate’s degree in a computing technologies field is preferred.
 

An associate level vendor certification (e.g. CompTIA A+, Network+, CCENT) is required as approved by the IT Director.
 

Computer Technician III
 

A Bachelor’s degree or advanced training in a computing technology field is preferred.
 

A professional level certification (e.g. MCSA- Windows, CompTIA Security+ or similar certification) is required as approved by the IT Director.
 

Required License or Certification:
 

A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days, or a military waiver is required.
 

Special Requirements:
 

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
 

Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb.
 

With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
 

Withstand exposure to noise, vibration, cool temperatures, computer monitor screens, and electrical hazards.
 

Use a mouse and keyboard.
