About the Position
Community Outreach Group is seeking an enthusiastic Deputy Program Director, reporting directly to the National Program Director. The Deputy Program Director will lead a team of Campaign Managers that will manage multiple contracts to fight attacks on reproductive health and manage proactive campaigns across the country, in close collaboration with Planned Parenthood state and local affiliates and partners.
Coach staff on the development of strategic campaign plans that accomplish immediate wins while building long-term capacity
Build a strong team culture of learning and support among regional teams
Ensure that directors, managers, organizers, and wage staff are well resourced to do their jobs (via training, logistical support, and facilitating communication between COG's DC leadership, our clients and stakeholders, and staff on the ground).
Identify opportunities to develop new program areas related to organizing and paid canvassing.
Participate in the organizational development of an innovative and scrappy start-up within a larger, established institution.
Up to 75% travel may be required for trainings, site visits and national meetings or conferences.
People Management: Work with the Program Director to support the work of State Directors (and indirectly, their teams, which can range from a dozen to thousands of employees in total) – . Conduct team and 1:1 meetings, support the development of campaigns and work plans, and hold employees accountable to quantitative and qualitative goals. Identify opportunities for ongoing training, professional development, and leadership development among current staff cohort. Recruit and hire additional staff as needed.
Program Coordination: Resource staff to do the best job possible by identifying resources within Planned Parenthood or Community Outreach Group, facilitating communication, and keeping the logistical trains running on time for your team. This will include opportunities for new business development.
Organizational Development: Identify opportunities for improvement within the organization by participating in discussion and offering feedback for high-level COG strategy, structure, and process. COG is still a new entity (created in mid-2014) and you will be a key contributor to our organizational growth and culture.
Successful applicants to this role will have the following qualifications:
Demonstrated success managing complex projects and staff teams with multiple focus points
Expertise in the management and execution of paid canvass tactics
Creative and flexible approach to accomplishing goals in the face of changing tactics and multiple simultaneous priorities;
Ability to develop a campaign plan by identifying goals, developing strategy, choosing tactics, and evaluating progress, and the ability to coach staff to break down goals for individual team members
Self-motivated to identify priorities for yourself and your team, complete work without micro-management, and hold employees accountable to deliverables;
Ability to navigate complex structures and balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience managing a significant budget
We expect that successful applicants for this role will have at least 6 years of organizing and leadership experience that has escalated over time.
We especially encourage applicants with the following qualifications:
Experience with VAN and/or using data to analyze progress and optimize work
Experience in both issue-based and electoral organizing
Expertise is both volunteer organizing tactics and paid canvass tactics
Experience in advance work
Proven track record of managing remote-based employees
Experience in electoral and/or community organizing
Bilingual in English and Spanish
There is no formal education requirement for this position, and the position can be based anywhere in the United States.
This is a full-time, exempt, senior-level position with the Community Outreach Group, with an annual base salary of $75-85k. Full-time exempt employees are also eligible for a cell phone reimbursement up to $75/month, and employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee.
