FLORIDA TODAY, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an intrepid general assignment Watchdog Reporter with a penchant for finding and unravelling complex stories and telling them in compelling ways. We are looking for a journalist who is unafraid to ask tough questions of those in authority; a reporter who won’t lose sight of the story when combing through reams of records, interviews and data. If you settle for simplistic answers from bureaucrats, this is not the job for you.

We value accuracy, fairness and fearless reporting that uncovers wrongs and pinpoints who’s responsible. You will join a team of reporters and will conduct investigations of pressing topics both jointly and individually.

Brevard County, with a population more than 600,000, faces environmental, growth, social justice and political challenges. There is no specific beat portfolio and the successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to handle a wide range of topics from public health gaps to social inequality to delving into how government decisions impact residents. The ability to localize national stories is key. You need a track record of finding and building stories around real people. You should understand how to use social media to report, uncover sources and promote your reporting.

The right candidate should be adept at source development; have experience finding and using public records and databases, have knowledge of AP style; and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and weekend deadlines. The ability to write and report for digital and print platforms is a must. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the ability to shoot and produce video as well as develop, research and write groundbreaking narrative enterprise stories. Familiarity with data analysis and analytic tools/programs is a plus.

Requirements:

• Bachelors' degree in Journalism, Communication, or similar;

• 3+ years of reporting at a daily newspaper or equivalent media;

Valid driver's license

• Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, receive constructive feedback and work as part of a team yet still show individual initiative.

This position is full-time with benefits and you'll be based in our office in Rockledge on Florida’s Space Coast, where beach trips and rocket launches are part of our community’s daily life. We're surrounded by water and beautiful parks. The communities that make up the Space Coast are growing and we're a short drive from Orlando. As part of the USA TODAY Network, there are opportunities for statewide and a national platform, as well as room to advance.

Please include a cover letter to tell us why you’re right for this job.
