Georgia State Politics & Enterprise/Investigative Reporter

 

Georgia is a key state for political, population and business shifts. Decisions made by lawmakers, businesses and advocates of innumerable causes resonate throughout the state and beyond.

 

This reporter would cover stories that impact residents, while also reporting larger, breaking news events for three Georgia newsrooms and Gannett/USA TODAY NETWORK. This reporter may be based in Atlanta or any area of the state.

 

Responsibilities:   

 

  • Tells stories of politics and policies from the statehouse to Washington, D.C., through the experiences of people who live in and around our primary coverage areas of Savannah, Augusta and Athens, connecting those residents to the work that’s being done on their behalf in Atlanta.
  • Delves into issues of interest statewide and across the country.
  • Covers key issues for those three communities, such as cyber growth, energy, the environment and the military.
  • Informs readers about how decisions impact their lives and helps readers understand complex issues with smart coverage that humanizes topics.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ reporting/newsroom experience preferred.
  • Strong command of AP grammar and style. 
  • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready." 
  • Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
  • Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories. 
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing. 
  • Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission. 
  • Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & urinalysis drug screen (for driving roles only).
