Spartanburg City Reporter

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal /goupstate.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a reporter to cover the city of Spartanburg.

Spartanburg is part of the vibrant Upstate of South Carolina. Along with neighboring Greenville, it is the largest metro area in South Carolina. As of 2019 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, Spartanburg County is the 19th fastest-growing metropolitan area in the country.

Spartanburg features a vibrant downtown, and an important aspect of the city reporter’s job is to know what’s happening downtown. Not just “what’s coming or what’s going,” but “how” and “why” did it happen. On top of that, the city also features north, south, east and west corridors with unique interests.

The city beat is far more than covering council meetings.

Our reporters are expected to develop community sources especially within under-served communities. This is a municipal beat that should also be in tune with business, public transportation, affordable housing, racial equity and neighborhood sustainability.

In a competitive news market, the Herald-Journal strives to be the first to inform readers with breaking news and analysis related to the city. This reporter is expected to file public records requests and mine data for enterprise stories. This reporter also works closely with our county government, growth and development and public safety reporters for story tips and ideas.

Spartanburg sits halfway between Charlotte and Atlanta. We are 45 minutes from the Blue Ridge Mountains and three hours from the Atlantic Coast.
