Part-Time Sports Copy Editor

A Sports Copy Editor for the sports department for will make corrections for accuracy, grammar, spelling and style. They also organize stories to ensure accuracy, readability and logic, as well as check facts. Work also includes helping put together the sports section in print by writing headlines, cutlines and proofing pages. The ideal candidate must be able to work evenings on Wednesday through Saturday.



  1. Edit stories for online and print publication.
  2. Follow AP & Tulsa World style.
  3. Makes sure page deadlines are met.
  4. Determines appropriate length for stories based on space requirements.
  5. Cross checks headlines, cutlines, graphics and other display type with story.
  6. Writes headlines that are accurate, fair and timely.
  7. Attach video, photos and other multimedia online to stories.
  8. Complete other duties so that the online, e-edition and print edition are complete and delivered to subscribers and readers.
  9. Represent the Tulsa World in a professional and courteous manner, and always project a professional image in the community.
  10. Effectively complete assignments from editors by the required deadline.
  11. Keep up with changes in technology and style.


  1. Must have knowledge about sports.
  2. Ability to follow all company policies and procedures including but not limited to attendance standards.
  3. Must have an intermediate to advanced level knowledge of journalism.
  4. Effectively utilize time and meet strict deadlines.
  5. This position requires the ability to work onsite and remotely.  


  1. Bachelor's degree, preferably in Journalism, Mass Communications, Strategic Communications or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.     
  2. Minimum of 2 years of daily newspaper experience or equivalent.
  3. Must have good computer skills and experience in social media.
