Night Editor

The Billings Gazette, the state’s largest newspaper,is in search of a night editor. We want someone who can read copy with a critical eye, and multitask while communicating with teams in multiple locations. This position is responsible for organizing the newspaper, making key decisions and meeting deadlines each night.
 

Daily duties include pulling wire stories, proofreading copy, headline writing, wrangling breaking news, approving pages for print, posting stories online and sharing content to social media. This person will work with other editors and writers prepping stories for print, polishing them and detecting errors in style and fact.
 

If InDesign is not your thing, no worries--the paper is designed offsite. We are in need of an eagle-eyed style/grammar all-star who is adaptable and digitally savvy. There are also occasional opportunities to write for our special publications.
 

This shift is approximately 3 p.m. to midnight. You will work five days a week, with at least one weekend shift required. This is a union position, as the Gazette is a News Guild member. Starting compensation for guild members is $35K per year, but could be higher depending on experience. Traditional journalism education or experience is preferable, but not required. Applicants with English degrees and strong writing backgrounds have excelled at this job in the past.
