This is a full-time position
BASIC FUNCTION: Assists Cook and other kitchen staff in the preparation food and beverages. Maintains storerooms, walk-in coolers and freezers. Receives and stores foods and supplies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to communicate with, be interested in, and have compassion for the elderly. The ability to communicate, both verbal and written, in English is essential.
Possess organizational skills sufficient enough to meet deadlines and objectives. Must be able to work in a team environment and to maintain professional composure under stressful conditions.
Must be able to read menus and production sheets. Must understand therapeutic diets and be able to prepare foods to meet the needs of a variety of different diets.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent. Able to read, write, understand and speak in English. One-year food service experience as a cook's helper ideally in a retirement community, health center, or institutional food service department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work hours may require schedule flexibility (early AM shifts starting at 5:00 AM). Position requires the ability to lift and carry light objects and to push or pull objects of 50 pounds or less. Frequently stands, walks, kneels, twisting upper body, object manipulation, loading and unloading food supplies, handling bulk food items, lifting, pushing and pulling equipment. Visually needs to identify objects at a distance of 20 feet and read fine print and discriminate color. Frequently will be required to hear normal sounds where there is background noise. Must be able to make self-understood.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to function in a busy environment with shifting and evolving priorities. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls, inquires, and unpredictable events. Handles emergency or crises situations. Stable emotional makeup required to work in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions.
