HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Registered Veterinary Technician performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's (SDZWA) mission of integrating wildlife health and care, science, and education to develop sustainable conservation solutions. The Registered Veterinary Technician assists the veterinary staff with clinical and surgical procedures, is responsible for performing diagnostic radiographs, and provides technical support and nursing care for the collection, while advocating for the animals entrusted to our care. This position reports to the Veterinary Services Wildlife Care Supervisor.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide nursing care, including bandaging, applying splints, emergency first aid, neonate health assessment, and dental prophylaxis to SDZWA Wildlife
  • Maintain all anesthetic machines to ensure proper function and monitor wildlife before, during and upon recover from anesthetic procedures
  • Perform diagnostic radiographs on all animal species in our collection using various radiographic modalities such as mammography, digital radiography (in house and in the field), Computed Tomography (with and without intravenous contrast)
  • Provide emergency care, including, recognize and triage the compromised, sick, ill, dying, and/or arresting patients, monitor, medicate and maintain records and continuously evaluate critical patients
  • Setup and prepare surgical suite for a variety of procedures, including assisting doctors and preparing, positioning and clipping surgically prepare patients for surgery
  • Setup endoscopy/laparoscopy equipment and ensure proper use of, cleaning, sterilizing and care of the variety of rigid and flexible video scopes used
  • Fill or compound prescribed medications for wildlife patients and work with controlled drugs while maintaining appropriate records and documentation
  • Correctly handle and use pneumatic CO2 darting pistol and rifles as well as other remote injection delivery equipment in a safe and professional manner
  • Operate class IV Laser, following all safety and training guidelines and protocols
  • Ensure strict adherence to all CDC quarantine regulations and protocols
  • Compassionately euthanizes animals as directed

JOB EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in veterinary technology or veterinary technician experience in a zoo or exotic animal research facility required

 

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree Graduate or an AVMA Accredited RVT Program required
  • California licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician within 1 year

 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgement and give direction when appropriate
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate specific doctor needs without supervision or direction
  • Familiar with proper use of anesthetic machines used at a zoo facility, to include but not limited to: Small mammal ventilator, exotic bird/ reptile ventilator, Mallard large animal ventilator, Mega-vertebrate ventilator, standard human ventilator, rebreathing and non-rebreathing anesthetic circuits, fish and amphibian anesthetics
  • Strong working knowledge or anesthetic agents and associated drug combinations commonly used in the zoo setting, such as halogenated anesthetic gases, injectable anesthetics, ultra-potent narcotics, sedatives and neuroleptics
  • Able to respond competently and swiftly to emergency situations
  • Knowledge of anesthetic complications and how to respond to emergencies of the anesthetized patient
  • Possess a working knowledge of medication used in a zoological pharmacy
  • Understand the dangers and be situationally aware when ultra-potent narcotics are in use
  • Strong working knowledge of laboratory procedures in the analysis of biological samples
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement preventative heath projects as directed for overall health of collection animals
  • Knowledge of Human CPR and first aid is desirable
  • Able to operate word processing and spreadsheet systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work with teams and communicate effectively with others in a diverse, fast paced working environment
