The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Victim Advocate Out Reach for the Pasco County Domestic Violence Shelter located in Pasco County Florida.

Job Summary

Provides crisis counseling, follow-up, information and referral, personal advocacy, criminal justice support, emergency legal advocacy, telephone contact, assistance with filing Victim Compensation to domestic violence victims.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of rehabilitative and crisis counseling.

Knowledge of the laws and procedures of criminal justice agencies as they affect the responsibilities and rights of victims.

Knowledge of community resources to provide information and referrals to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Knowledge of the family dynamics and issues of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Knowledge of social service resources and agencies in the community.

Knowledge of effective communication and motivation practices.

Ability to perform crisis intervention by counseling victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse and assist them in taking the appropriate corrective actions.

Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during state of crisis.

Ability to develop program plans and goals based on client's needs.

Ability to work with the public encompassing all types of behaviors.

Ability to interview clients and to obtain pertinent information.

Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete case notes and client records.

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in order to accomplish work in compliance with quality standards and deadlines.

Ability to build and maintain effective and professional working relationships.

    

Education and Experience

Associates degree in a human service related field, sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, criminology or related field;

and

Two years experience working with victims of domestic violence and or sexual assault

or

any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Licenses and Certifications

Valid state driver’s license

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

 

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

 

Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.

 

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

 

Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple cases at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized.

 

Ability to drive a vehicle in order to serve as advocate for victims at the hospital or police department and to transport victims to court related appointments.

 

Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.

 

Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

Work is performed in a social services environment where exposure to communicable and infectious diseases are possible.

Work requires travel throughout six counties at times in order to serve as advocate for victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse.

Work requires ability to be on-call to respond to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault as scheduled, and to work some Holidays to ensure proper coverage of emergency shelter (will receive an alternate Holiday in lieu of official Holiday).
