The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith based organization has a job opening for a Custodian/Building Maintenance Worker for the Thrift Store, Vero Beach Corps, located in Vero Beach, FL.


Job Summary

Cleans and maintains the buildings and grounds to ensure the neatness and cleanliness of the same on a daily basis. Performs routine repairs and maintenance of buildings, equipment; performs minor plumbing and carpentry repair work.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Custodial Job Duties:

Mops and cleans the following on a daily basis: all common areas (inside and outside) and offices including emptying trash bins. Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms; cleans sinks and toilets, polishes mirrors, and replenishes supplies. Sweeps, vacuums, mops all floors; sweeps sidewalks.

Cleans windows; dusts and polishes furniture and fixtures.

Cleans kitchen and dining area, cleans stoves and ovens.

Assists in setting up meeting rooms; sets up tables and chairs.

Assists in monitoring light fixtures to ensure all light bulbs are in working order; replaces light bulbs as necessary.

Monitors cleaning supplies, advising Property Manager with supplies need replenishing.

Building Maintenance Duties:

Performs routine building maintenance activities; performs minor plumbing repairs required by leaking faucets and clogged toilets; perform carpentry work required to repair dents and/or holes in walls and paints walls.

Assembles and moves office furniture including chairs, desks, tables, bulletin boards, etc.

Drives truck in order to pick up materials andrepair items needed for maintenance work.

Cleans surroundings after each repair job; ensures that all tools are collected, and surroundings are left neat and clean.

Monitors lighting and changes light bulbs when needed.

Assists in maintaining tools, supplies, parts, and equipment belonging to Maintenance Department.

Assists with garbage removal.

Clean vacant apartments in preparation for occupancy.

Assists Property Manager in the repair of ongoing maintenance requests.

Other Responsibilities
Operates a bailer machine to secure, package and bind large volumes of clothing.

Assists in performing building maintenance and repair work by carrying supplies, etc.

Assists in performing grounds keeping work.

Drives Salvation Army vehicle to pick-up and/or deliver mail and other miscellaneous items or to transport passengers on occasion.

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience

High school diploma or G.E.D., and two years of experience working in a social or public service environment with experience assisting the public or, any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid State driver’s license may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of general building andground maintenance practices and procedures.

Ability to learn by method of on-the-job training including ability to follow instructions.

Ability to perform routine and minor repair and maintenance activities of buildings and grounds.

Ability to use and maintain maintenance equipment and tools effectively and in a safe manor.

Ability to perform general maintenance and cleaning activities for buildings and grounds

Ability to follow instructions and work independently.

Ability to maintain driving ability according to State and The Salvation Army policies. Procedures, and certifications.

Mental and Physical Abilities

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Ability to read and communicate the English language.

Ability to exert the physical energy required to performing housekeeping and minor maintenance work.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and climbing.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes to weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.
