Probation Counselor

JOB TITLE: PROBATION COUNSELOR

The Salvation Army, an internationally recognizes non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for (two) Probation Counselors for the Ocala Corps, located in Ocala, Florida, with a $12.41 hourly rate.

JOB SUMMARY:

Supervises, tracks, monitors, records, and evaluates the progress of assigned probation clients ensuring that all assigned clients understand their terms and conditions of probation. Searches out the needs of the clients and makes available to them the community resources that will help them meet their needs (i.e., job referrals, alcohol counseling, welfare, Community Service Worksites, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of criminal justice principles and practices. Knowledge of court procedures and legal terms in order to assist judges and instruct clients. Knowledge of The Salvation Army Corrections probation policies and procedures. Knowledge of effective communication and motivation practices. Knowledge of general bookkeeping and recordkeeping practices and procedures. Knowledge of time management practices and procedures. Ability to represent The Salvation Army's interest in a professional and positive manner and in compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Ability to testify in court and provide observations and recommendations regarding defendant’s probation conditions and/or termination of probation. Ability to work with the public encompassing all types of behaviors. Ability to interview clients and to obtain pertinent information. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete client records. Ability to build and maintain effective and professional relationships with other agencies and defendants. Ability to maintain the confidential nature of the client’s cases as outlined by the established policies and procedures.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Valid State Driver’s License.

Drug Screen Collector Certificate

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Two years college from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a related field and two years progressively responsible in a court system or probation, parole, social casework or counseling with at least six months experience working in a corrections program, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write and communicate the English language. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to think clearly and quickly under pressure in order to provide recommendations and observations to the judge. Ability to think clearly and quickly in order to maintain control of client caseload. Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple cases at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time. Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
